Amelia's Jewel shines in Northerly Stakes win

Trainer Simon Miller was so relaxed he spent Saturday morning sinking beers in the pool before his star filly Amelia's Jewel provided him with his greatest racing moment when winning the Group 1 Northerly Stakes (1800m) at Ascot.

Such was Miller‘s confidence in Amelia's Jewel, he knew his work was done and could let his explosive filly do the talking.

And she did, with an explosive Northerly Stakes performance.

Amelia‘s Jewel has been one of the most talked about fillies in the country over the past year and confirmed her status as an emerging superstar of the Australian turf with a dominant win in the $1.5m feature.

For Miller it was a maiden Group 1 after he had been around the mark several times during his career.

"We‘ve been peppering away. At some stage, it was always going to happen but to be honest, it didn't really worry me," Miller said.

"I just love winning, whether it be here or Northam. I‘m a competitive bastard, I just love winning.

"I actually tried to win the Northerly that many times because I'm in awe of this bloke (trainer Fred Kersley) and I was in awe of Northerly.

"I walked in and gave him (Fred Kersley) a big cuddle and Judith Kersley (Fred's wife) said, ‘don't you start crying' and I was like, 'strewth, how bad is this', I was getting told off!"

Jockey Patrick Carbery delivered a peach from the gun inside draw, getting Amelia‘s Jewel off the fence and two pairs back in the run.

When he unleashed Amelia‘s Jewel ($2.90) in the straight, she delivered a powerful burst to kick a length clear from the Will Clarken-trained Ironclad ($71) while Ciaron Maher and David Eustace's Steinem ($12) made up ground along the fence to finish third.

Highly talented Godolphin galloper Cascadian ($3.20) was fourth.

"She is just a freak. She‘s got an unbelievable engine with a huge stride and a great brain," Miller said.

"It was 44 years since someone had won the Karrakatta (Plate) and the (WA) Guineas and she ticked that one off.

"Her gallop Tuesday was superb and it was work she did leading into the Guineas and won, so I knew we had her on track.

It was a fifth career Group 1 for Carbery, who also partnered Northerly to multiple wins during the champion galloper's career two decades ago.

"This is by far my biggest win in racing, no risk," Carbery said.

"We set ourselves a plan to be here, we never thought we'd definitely get here but we got here.

"Last start meant we were on track and the three-year-olds have a great record.

"There were plenty of doubters, there are always doubters. We never doubted her."

Owner-breeder Peter Walsh fought back tears as he celebrated his maiden Group 1.

Walsh, who owns Amelia Park, has been involved in the industry for half a century and finally got his first major with a filly he labelled a ‘superhero'.

"I‘ve waited 50 years for it," Walsh said.

"It‘s a bit surreal. I think I've died and gone to heaven.

"Seven seconds in Group 1s, two thirds and two fourths so to do it today with the family‘s superstar. We think she is a superstar. We love her."

Owner/breeder won’t sell ‘special filly’, eyes up maiden Group 1

Peter Walsh, the owner of Amelia Park Racing, claims he has no interest in selling unbeaten filly Amelia’s Jewel and is hoping the rising star of the turf can hand him his Group 1 victory. Longtime owner/breeder Peter Walsh is adamant Amelia’s Jewel (Siyouni {Fr}) is the best horse he has had anything to do with. The Simon Miller-trained 3-year-old kept her perfect record intact on Saturday, scoring a gutsy first-up win in the Listed Belgrave S. at Ascot.

The three-year-old Siyouni filly Amelia's Jewel extended her unbeaten sequence to four with a gutsy win at her seasonal debut in Saturday's Listed Drummond Golf-Belgravia Stakes (1200m) at Ascot. Amelia Park's Peter Walsh purchased Bumbasina (IRE) for 76,000 guineas at the 2019 Tattersalls July Sale through Astute Bloodstock. He sent her to Siyouni to southern hemisphere time, and Amelia's Jewel is the result.

There was no wide-margin success for Star Patrol at his second visit down the Flemington straight on Saturday, but the stopwatch again made for favourable viewing ahead of his first attempt in Stakes company. Star Patrol produced a jaw-dropping seven-length win as an $11 chance in a three-year-old handicap over 1200 metres at Flemington last month, stopping the clock in 1:08.84.
