Back to Business for Amelia's Jewel in WA Guineas

Mark Smith, Breednet

After losing her unbeaten record in the Burgess Queen Stakes, it was business as usual for Amelia's Jewel as she snapped Bustler's undefeated run in the $500,000 Group II WA Guineas at Ascot on Saturday.

Ridden by Patrick Carbery for Simon Miller, the 3yo daughter of Siyouni tracked Busler into the straight. One of two fillies in the race, Amelia's Jewel defeated the stubborn Bustler (Playing God) by three-quarter length, with Saintorio (Oratorio) one and a quarter length back in third.

Running in the Guineas in preference to last week's Champion Fillies Stakes, Amelia's Jewel becomes the first winner of the Karrakatta Plate-WA Guineas double since Rare Sovereign in 1978.

All five wins by Amelia's Jewel in her 6-start career have come in stakes races, banking  $$838,100 for Amelia Park's Peter Walsh. "I'm very proud. It's been a great job by Simon because she has been behind the eight ball right from the word go when she did not come back well," Walsh said.

'She demonstrated today what a great horse she is.

"She will probably have one more start before she heads east."

It was an emotional win for Miller, who had been in the winner's stall four times in the race.

"I’m emotional because this race has dead-set been a thorn in my side.

“It’s just a great result for all the staff.”

A homebred for Amelia Park Racing & Breeding, Amelia's Jewel is the only winner to date for the stakes-placed Canford Cliffs mare Bumbasina (IRE).

Through Astute Bloodstock, Peter Walsh purchased Bumbasina (IRE) for 76,000 guineas at the 2019 Tattersalls July Sale. He sent her to Siyouni to southern hemisphere time, and Amelia's Jewel is the result.

A half-sister to Group II winner Epona Plays (Australia) and Group III winner Dolce Strega (Zoffany), Bumbasina (IRE) has a 2yo colt by Merchant Navy, which topped Magic Millions Perth Book 2, selling for $160,000. He has been named True Heroes and is in training with Sean and Jake Casey.

Bumbasina (IRE) has a 2yo Merchant Navy colt named True heroes, a yearling colt by Blue Point (IRE) and missed last spring.

Segenhoe Stud consign the Blue Point (IRE) colt to the Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale in January (Lot 690)

Haras de Bonneval’s champion stallion Siyouni (FR) had a profitable day as the Lloyd Kennewell-trained gelding Direct won the $175,000 Magic Millions Ballarat 3 & 4YO Classic.

Owner/breeder won’t sell ‘special filly’, eyes up maiden Group 1

Peter Walsh, the owner of Amelia Park Racing, claims he has no interest in selling unbeaten filly Amelia’s Jewel and is hoping the rising star of the turf can hand him his Group 1 victory. Longtime owner/breeder Peter Walsh is adamant Amelia’s Jewel (Siyouni {Fr}) is the best horse he has had anything to do with. The Simon Miller-trained 3-year-old kept her perfect record intact on Saturday, scoring a gutsy first-up win in the Listed Belgrave S. at Ascot.

Star Patrol impresses again at HQ

There was no wide-margin success for Star Patrol at his second visit down the Flemington straight on Saturday, but the stopwatch again made for favourable viewing ahead of his first attempt in Stakes company. Star Patrol produced a jaw-dropping seven-length win as an $11 chance in a three-year-old handicap over 1200 metres at Flemington last month, stopping the clock in 1:08.84.
