Purple patch for Astute purchases

It has been a good few days for our clients and partners with five recent winners in NSW and Victoria.

It is a fitting time to acknowledge the commitment of our passionate clients and owners in general who underpin the whole industry and contribute so much to the sport.

Our strike rate over 9 years in business (82.5% winners to runners) and our consistency over this time is linked to a very calculated and selective buying approach. Interestingly, our recent winners were relatively inexpensive and 4/5 were by unproven stallions when we bought them however, they were all outstanding physical athletes. Focussing on the physical and the female line is a good way for us to find value, as the best yearlings by proven stallions often command a price tag that can defy logic for most owners.

Our recent winners include:

  • Nags to Riches (Written Tycoon) 3yo filly with 3 starts, 2 wins and a second in Sydney. I think this filly has untapped ability and could be a group horse. She won with a lot of authority both times, she is very lightly raced and she has grown from a medium-sized quality yearling to a stunning 3yo filly.  She is trained by Brad Widdup and she is owned by Greenhaven Park, Lustre Lodge, and partners. We purchased her at the Magic Millions sales for $135K in 2019.

  • Zorocat (Toronado) 8 starts, 2 wins, 3 seconds and 1 third. Although this 3yo filly is by a champion miler she has a lot of speed and loves to contest the lead, which makes her better suited to sprinting distances.  She was unlucky not to win on two other occasions but she fought on both times. Her last win under Jason Collet was very impressive and I think that she has the ability to win in town on a Saturday and maybe get some black type later on. She is from an excellent female family and we purchased her at the Inglis Classic sales for $150K in 2019. She is trained by Damien Lane and is owned by Greenhaven Park, Lustre Lodge, and partners.

  • Category Five (Sacred Falls) 4yo gelding ,4 wins, 2 seconds and one 3rd. This is a beautiful late-maturing miler that we purchased in NZ in 2018 for NZ$260K. He won 3 in a row last prep and we are hoping that he can do the same this time. I think he is improving with time, maturity, and practice. His win last week was very impressive and it is a promising start for this prepartion. He is trained by Ciaron Maher and David Eustace and he is owned by Collin McKenna, Stephen Pelegrino, and a great bunch of other owners.

  • Reformist (Dissident) 4yo gelding with 4 wins and 3 third from 14 starts. This horse won his maiden in Sydney on debut and he then went on to run 3rd in a Gr3 behind subsequent Derby winner Quick Thinker. Since moving to Victoria he won 2 races from 5 for Archie Alexander and he is improving all the time. Reformist was purchased at the Easter sales for $140K and he has already earned $120K. He is owned by a large syndicate which includes a group of first-time owners who are enjoying the ride.

  • Witchfulthinking ( War Chant)  4yo mare, 17 starts, 4 wins, and 5 places. Trained by Andrew Noblet this mare often wins with authority and her winning margins average 4 lengths. She is a stunning mare who is closely related to the double Gr1 winner Delicacy. We bought her at the Magic Millions Perth sales for $120k and she has now earned $115K in prizemoney. We will now try to find some black-type races for her in the coming months.

Last Saturday was a special day for Astute Bloodstock given that each of our 5 runners rose to the occasion and won convincingly at Royal Randwick and Flemington. Our priority at work is to select and purchase future elite racehorses so it was a thrill to see 3 winning at Gr.2 level.

Owner/breeder won’t sell ‘special filly’, eyes up maiden Group 1

Owner/breeder won’t sell ‘special filly’, eyes up maiden Group 1

Peter Walsh, the owner of Amelia Park Racing, claims he has no interest in selling unbeaten filly Amelia’s Jewel and is hoping the rising star of the turf can hand him his Group 1 victory. Longtime owner/breeder Peter Walsh is adamant Amelia’s Jewel (Siyouni {Fr}) is the best horse he has had anything to do with. The Simon Miller-trained 3-year-old kept her perfect record intact on Saturday, scoring a gutsy first-up win in the Listed Belgrave S. at Ascot.

Amelia's Jewel Pulls It Out of the Fire

The three-year-old Siyouni filly Amelia's Jewel extended her unbeaten sequence to four with a gutsy win at her seasonal debut in Saturday's Listed Drummond Golf-Belgravia Stakes (1200m) at Ascot. Amelia Park's Peter Walsh purchased Bumbasina (IRE) for 76,000 guineas at the 2019 Tattersalls July Sale through Astute Bloodstock. He sent her to Siyouni to southern hemisphere time, and Amelia's Jewel is the result.
